We’ve compiled a list of action steps you can take as a volunteer with Climate Reality, as a citizen, in your community, and in your home and life to help combat climate change. Your first step? Join the Sacramento Climate Reality chapter to join a seasoned group of climate activists.
WITH CLIMATE REALITY
- Attend chapter events online or in person
- Volunteer to do community outreach at local events
- Collaborate on a presentation with other trained leaders
- Participate in The Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training
AS A CITIZEN
- Write or call your local, state, and national officials urging action on climate change. Use the Climate Action Now app to help you get started
- Write and submit letters and emails to the editors of newspapers on climate change issues
IN YOUR COMMUNITY
- Join other climate activist groups – Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), 350.org, Sierra Club, etc.
- Actively participate in climate rallies held in your city and region
- Encourage your city council and county board of supervisors to support climate-friendly policies
- Join or start a community garden or tree-planting organization
- Encourage your city, house of worship, and volunteer groups to go green and install solar panels, plant trees
IN YOUR HOME & LIFE
- Reduce, reuse, recycle
- Replace old gas appliances such as HVAC and water heaters with efficient new heat pump models. Check Rewiring America.org for rebates and tax credits
- Replace old gas stoves with an energy-efficient induction stove. Check Rewiring America.org for rebates and tax credits
- Buy green cleaning products such as non-toxic cleansers, toiletries, etc.
- Turn off and unplug appliances, lamps, TVs, computers, etc. when not in use
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs
- Choose 100% renewable energy option with your local energy utility
- Reduce food waste and create a compost bin to recycle waste to generate new soil
- Eat less meat. Eat a more local, organic, plant-based diet. Try Meatless Mondays
- Drive less (opt for a hybrid, electric, or hydrogen car when possible). Carpool. Walk or bike more. Use public mass transit where available
- When you’re ready for a new car, choose an EV. Visit California Climate Action to learn about rebates, tax credits, and other incentives.
- Divest from your portfolio stocks in fossil fuel companies featuring oil, gas, and coal
- Invest in renewable energy public companies
- Landscape gardens with drought-resistant native plants and add additional trees. Get free trees from SMUD.
- Choose plastic-free alternative products
- Schedule a free energy audit of your home with your local utility
- Insulate your home and install double-pane windows to prevent heat loss. Check Rewiring America.org for rebates and tax credits
- Use bamboo wood, which sequesters a lot of carbon, when renovating your home
- Conserve water by collecting water in shower and kitchen to water your garden
- Flush toilets less frequently and reduce water tank volume
- Use rain barrels to collect excess water coming off your roof during storms
- Turn your thermostat down in the winter to use less heat and turn it up in the summer to less air conditioning
- Regularly replace old filters on heaters, dryers, and other appliances
- Use a programmable thermostat to save energy when you are not at home
- Install rooftop solar to generate your own clean energy. Check Rewiring America.org to learn about tax credits to cover up to 30% of the cost.
